This past month has been a big one. It marked six years since I left Minneapolis, my home of 13 years, to move to Humboldt County in northern California. It was my one year anniversary of returning to communications work, having taken a break for several years after a particularly harrowing job in the field. August also brought my first trip back to WI, where I grew up, since before the move and meeting my new nephew.

So…it’s been a big one—one that has brought much reflection on all that has transpired, shifted and changed over the last six years—and all that has stayed the same.

Having the privilege of being part of last weekend’s Breathing Bridges, my friend Lauren Godla’s celebration of the nii~-li~ river through art, was truly a transformative one. It brought my reflections of this past month together, highlighting what I’m so grateful to have in this my life—specifically connection to nature, community and creativity.

And thus, this week I’d like to share a (partial and always shifting) list of what I am grateful for at this point on my journey. Because as much as we are told that our individual selves are all that matter, that we can trust no one and are in constant competition with one another, it is truly our connection that brings such magic and beauty into the world and our lives.

Right now, I’m feeling immense gratitude for:

• All of the friends, family, folks I work with and casual acquaintances who make my life full of experiences, love and joy

• The support and encouragement of others in finding and walking this path of purpose and meaning, including invitations to be part of their own visions

• Nature, in all her mind-blowing glory, for continuously caring and providing for us, despite all we do to dishonor her and her beings (including ourselves)

• That spark of creativity, held and encouraged by all of the connections in my life, to create beauty, joy and transformative experiences

• My household, including my partner and the dogs. Love you Yarrow/Dr. Dan/GB/Mr. Whispers and Tony/Charith Cutestory/Tony Baloney/Tone Zone! I only wish everyone could have such unconditional love from furry friends.

• Taking chances and trying new things, all that makes life interesting

• All those who inspire and support my own artistic life through their beauty, magic, work and creations

Yes! After much excitement about last month’s look at Miranda July’s excellent All Fours, the Double Gemini Book Club is back Wednesday, Oct. 2 postponed to Oct. 16! from 6-7 p.m. pst to dig into Chris Kraus’ I Love Dick (yes, the same one as the show set in Marfa, and just as excellent though different on many levels).
